5 Lipsticks for Springtime

img_1669.jpg

Springtime is officially here!! I cannot express how excited I am for warm weather, the blooming flowers, and finally being able to wash my car - priorities y'all. Although spring isn't my #1 favourite season, it is up there. I love that everything starts to thaw and come back to life. But, most importantly, I love the chance to lighten up my makeup. Throughout the winter, I tend to wear darker eyeshadows and lipsticks. But spring is when all the pinks come out to play.

So, today I thought I'd share some of my fav spring lippy shades!

img_1670.jpg

REVLON ULTRA HD MATTE LIPCOLOUR - "SEDUCTION"

The first lipstick is one of my top shades ever. This was actually the lipstick that I wore to my senior prom a couple years ago and I loved wearing it. It's a very subtle, natural shade and it lasted the entire night, through a meal, drinks, and dancing, with only having to reapply once. For a matte liquid lipstick, it doesn't dry out your lips which makes it easier to reapply as you won't have chapped lips to bother with. As a bonus, it has a lovely fruit punch scent - although, after reading reviews, I've learned that half of the people loved it and half hated it, so that's something to be cautious of!!

Ulta, $9.99

RIMMEL LONDON LASTING FINISH BY KATE MOSS - "45"

Do you guys remember when these Kate Moss lippies first came out?? They were sooo popular. And I was hella obsessed haha. One of the ones that I've continued to regularly reach for over time is the shade 45. It's from the Nude collection and it's quite honestly a perfect pink-nude. It's a lovely cream formula, very long-lasting too. I love me a natural pink lip shade and this certainly delivers!

Walmart, $5.98

TOPSHOP LIPS - "MINK"

I may have mentioned before (maybe?? who knows) that I love the Topshop lipstick line. It's not something I've come by easily - the first one I bought was in London and the second in NYC - but whenever I get the chance, I take the opportunity to buy a new shade. In NYC, I picked up the shade "Mink". This is a lighter shade compared to the two I just mentioned, but very lovely all the same. The only problem is that this shade doesn't appear to be available online anymore... However, the shade "Coven" appears to be a very close match, so I've linked that below!

Topshop, $15

L'OREAL INFALLIBLE MEGA GLOSS - "GIRL ON TOP"

This is more of a lip gloss than a lipstick, and though I don't typically like lip glosses, this one isn't particularly sticky so it's all good. I love the baby pink shade of it and that it's quite sheer. I think it's a very girly colour, which would go really well with a flowy skirt or dressing for going out on a lovely spring night (can you tell I'm eager for warm weather?? lol). The only issue is that it's not very long-lasting or transfer-proof, so it requires a lot of reapplications.

L'OREAL PARIS COLOUR RICHE SERUM - "BEAMY PLUM"

Overall, I love the L'Oreal Colour Riche line. I have a couple of shades, but "Beamy Plum" is for sure one of my favourites. It's a very balmy, hydrating formula in a mauve pink. It kinda gives you that bare lip look without having a bare lip - which, idk about you, but I love it. It's really long-lasting and personally, it compliments my skin haha. Although this shade doesn't appear to be available anymore, I would def recommend basically any shade from this range.

Bedside Essentials

img_0360.jpg

I'm a total night owl. Waking up in the morning for me is absolute hell, but that's probably because I'm up until 3-4am the night before. It takes soo much to get me to fall asleep at a decent time so when I find out I have to be up super early the next morning, I have a whole system to coax me to sleep. With this comes a collection of products/items that I cannot live without, which permanently reside on my bedside table.

img_0361.jpg

A book

If I'm having trouble falling asleep, one of the only things that can help me get tired. (On the other hand, I also sometimes stay up all night to finish a book... but anyway). Currently, I'm reading All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven at night. I can only read young adults novels at night. I find any other genre keeps me wired, as I'm too enthralled in the novel.

Nighttime Face Cream

Nighttime skincare is so important as I'm sure you know and I'm sure I've said about a billion times. I have been using the e.l.f Nourishing Night Cream since the beginning of the summer and it feels so lovely on. The scent is also very relaxing which def helps me calm down at night.

Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief Room Spray

This is more aimed towards stress/anxiety, but I find it is also very soothing and useful for the issue of insomnia. You just spray two bursts of this in your room, perhaps over your bedding, and let it work it's magic. It seriously does wonders for me.

Lush Sleepy Lotion

This is a new purchase for me but it definitely deserves to be on this list. I've only used it once but I'm already super impressed. You've probably heard already heard of this lovely product and the rave reviews it's gotten from people with insomnia, anxiety, and chronic illnesses. It works so quickly to help you sleep naturally. Not to mention it makes your skin feel so freaking soft. Thank you, Lush!!

What essentials do you keep close to your bed?

Autumn Berry Makeup Look

fullsizerender-1.jpeg

Happy Halloween everybody!! Whether you're spending the holiday at a costume party, or sitting at home eating sweets, I hope you have a great night! Myself and my family will be handing out candy to the kids in our neighbourhood while eating chocolates and watching films. Today I want to do a quick post, going over one of my favourite autumn makeup looks. It's a berry/rosy kinda look, which is very flattering but also ever-so-simple to replicate, especially if you're rushing off in the morning to work or to class.

fullsizerender1.jpeg

To prep my face, I use theAveeno Clear Complexion Daily Moisturizer, after washing my face with either the Olay Clearly Clean Salicylic Acid Acne Treatment Scrub or the Olay Deeply Clean Mineral Face Cleanser. Once my face is prepped, I go in with the Maybelline Better Skin Concealer under my eyes, around my nose, basically anywhere that I need to conceal any redness or blemishes. I blend that out with a Real Techniques Contour Brush and then move onto my eyebrows.

For my eyebrows, I've lately been using the e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit with the e.l.f. Eyebrow Duo Brush. I use light strokes, following the shape of my eyebrows and the directions of my eyebrow hairs, and then I brush the product through with the little spoolie. Once I've finished, I go back in with the Maybelline Better Skin Concealer and apply it below and above my eyebrows, blending it out with a Real Techniques Pointed Foundation Brush.

For my eyes, I've been using the Too Faced Natural Love Palette a lot recently, as I think the colours are very autumnal. I blend the colour Honey Butter, which is a neutral pink, in my crease - then I blend the burgundy-coloured Makeup & Chill into the outer corner of each eye. I finish off with applying Honeymoon all over my lid to give my eye that extra pop. If I have time, I'll do a cat-eye flick with my eyeliner, using the Skone Cosmetics Insanely Intense Waterproof Eyeliner. Once I've finished my eyeliner, I complete the look with my Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara on my upper lashes.

For my face, I use the Rimmel Match Perfection Foundation, which I apply all over my face using the Real Techniques Buffing Brush or the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I set my foundation with Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Powder, and then apply the contour shade of the Smashbox Step-by-Step Contour Kit to the contours of my cheeks. Lastly, I apply Dripping in Gold from the Anastasia Beverly Hills That Glow Glow Kit to my cheekbones.

The very last step is applying my lipstick. I typically opt for the Colourpop's Lovebug Ultra Matte Lip, as it's a perfect burgundy shade for this season, and for this look.

October Favourites

img_0130.jpg

Is it really almost the end of October?! This month whipped right past me. And truthfully, I didn't get nearly as much done as I wanted to... But, oh well! There's always next month. And November means that Christmas is right around the corner!!!! I cannot tell you how excited I am for the Christmas season this year. My December is jam-packed with fun things, and my mum and I have already started purchasing some decorations for our first Christmas in the new house. Anyway, I'm getting distracted haha. What I'm really here to talk about today are my monthly favourites! I have quite a few favourites to go over this month and I'm very excited to share them all, so let's just jump right in.

The first thing I've been loving this month is the NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick. I purchased a tube of this liquid lipstick in the shade Kitten Heels in an order from one of my favourite online shops, Lulu's, and after the very first experimental use, I fell in love with it. I already own one of these lipsticks in Life's a Beach, which I leave in Florida as it's a coral that looks best with a tan. So I was happy to add another one to my collection, this time in a gorgeous bright red shade. I have loved wearing this with darker clothing, primarily the black turtleneck I purchased at the same time from Lulu's (don't you love when things work out like that?) as I find the contrasting dark-clothes-bright-lips combo is very flattering. It's not a terribly drying lipstick, either, which I obviously like.

Continuing on with make-up, I've found that I've often been reaching for the Skone Cosmetics Insanely Intense Tattooed Waterproof Eyeliner. Wow. That's a mouthful.I received this a long time ago in an Ipsy bag but kinda forgot about it for awhile and recently we have become reacquainted. It's been awhile since I consistently wore a winged eyeliner look, which used to be the only make-up look I ever wore back in high school. But lately, I've been "winging it" more often (haha) and I've been using the Skone eyeliner to do so. I have recently fallen out of love with former go-to eyeliner, the Maybelline EyeStudio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner (again, a long title), for a number of reasons, but mostly because it doesn't make a very dark line no matter how black the shade of liner is. But this Skone liner goes on very dark and stays on very dark, thankfully. So I think this one will stay in my day-to-day makeup look from now on.

Moving onto skincare, I've probably mentioned this product before, this is the Bio-Oil PurCellin Oil. It's a product used primarily for stretchmarks, scars of any kind, uneven skin tone, aging, and dehydrated skin. I have been using this on my acne and minimal acne scarring for awhile now and I've really started to see an improvement this month. I have a cluster of spots on the side of my face and some scattered elsewhere, so I just take a bit of this oil and rub it in all over my face. It makes your skin look and feel a bit oily so it's best used at night before bed or when you're sure you'll be staying-in, but once it soaks in, it's like magic. Obviously, it doesn't work overnight, but it does make a difference over time and I'm okay with waiting as long as it works!

Jumping over to haircare products, the Marc Anthony Nourishing Argan Oil of Morocco Treatment has been my bff this month. I used this religiously when I lived in my old house, but when I moved, it got misplaced and I never went out to buy a new one for reasons unknown. So I dealt with my frizzy, poofy hair for months. But, luckily, I found it at the bottom of my haircare bin in my bathroom earlier this month. I'm a happy gal. This argan oil is used in a few pumps on either dry or damp hair, as a styling product, or before bed as a treatment. It honestly does wonders for my very dry ends. My hair looks silky, even the day after using it. I don't know how I lived for a few months without it!

Now, moving onto a bit more random, non-beauty-related things I've been in love with in October...

This month, I received my brand new iPhone 8+ in the mail and I'm in love with it. Coming from an iPhone 6, it's been a huge adjustment, but totally worth it. The camera is to die for, and the new features are an absolute bonus. But, aside from just the phone, I received my new case for the 8+ in the mail, and it's BEAUTIFUL. It is the Casetify iPhone 8 Plus Castle Classic Grip Case. It's see-through on the back, with a bubblegum pink exterior and a beautiful image of a castle on the back. Usually, when buying a new phone case, I go onto Amazon and pick out a cheap, cute case. But this time, I saw this gorgeous case while browsing Casetify's site and had to have it. It totally screams Cinderella's Castle in Disney World (pretty sure that's what they intended) and since Disney is so important to me, I thought there was no better case out there for me. SOOO I dropped nearly $50 Canadian on it... Yikes. But so worth it.

Another random online purchase I received in the mail this month was Catherine Mason's "I Drink Coffee Like a Gilmore" Coffee Cozy. If you're not familiar with coffee cozies, you're probably not alone. I came across the concept when I was browsing the hundreds of accounts I follow through my Disney account on Instagram. A ton of people seemed to be taking photos of their coffee mugs around the parks with cute Disney-themed crochet cupholders. I clicked a link on one of the pictures, which brought me to an Instagram account and eventually to a website-shop, where I found this beauty. Am I obsessed with Gilmore girls? Yes. Do I love coffee? Yes. So, I decided this coffee cozy had to be mine. I ordered it back in July but unfortunately, with making the product and shipping it out, I didn't recieve it until a couple weeks ago. But it's here!! And I love it. I use it whenever I grab a Starbucks or a Tim's. My dad thinks it's ridiculous haha, but I just think it's so cute.

Lastly, this is something both my boyfriend and I have been loving, and that is The Office. I mentioned in last week's Friday Thoughtspost that my boyfriend and I have been watching this lately. But when I said watching, I meant bingeing. And by bingeing, I mean we watch it every night before bed. It's such a funny show and it's lovely to get tucked into bed in our pjs, wrap up into plush blankets, and throw on an episode (or three) of The Office before we call it a night. I'd say my favourite character is probably Pam, but I find everyone hilarious (except Andy ugh I hate Andy lol) especially Dwight. And yes, obviously my boyfriend and I are praying to god that Pam and Jim get together because that's meant to be.

So, there ya have it! Those are all the things I've been obsessed with in October. I hope you all enjoyed reading. Let me know in the comments if you're also a superfan of The Office haha.

Have a great week, everyone!

Why I Cancelled My Ipsy Subscription

screen-shot-2017-02-20-at-6-07-14-pm.png

After months of disappointment and a constant nagging in the back of my mind, last month I finally made the decision to cancel my Ipsy subscription. In my six months of being a member, I came across a few issues that ultimately led me to make the decision to close my account and I wanted to go through them one-by-one.

PERSONALIZED PRODUCTS - OR NOT?

As anyone with a subscription would know when you first sign up for Ipsy, you fill out a questionnaire about your preferences and physical traits that help to personalise the products that you receive in each Glambag. After filling out the questionnaire, I feel like it didn't really make much of a difference to the products I received. I'd specified that I didn't want to receive hair products (knowing that sample-sized goodies weren't going to do anything for my thick hair) but I got at least one hair product per month anyway.

DIMINISHING QUALITY

As the months went on, the quality of the products I received got visibly worse and worse. I started to notice the quality was going down when I received a matte liquid lipstick that made my lips crack and dry out immediately after putting on the product. But the last straw was all the bristles falling out of a brand new face brush in my May bag. It was extremely disappointing, honestly.

MONEY

One of the biggest issues that lead me to end my Ipsy subscription was the cost. Although it costs $10/month for most since I'm Canadian there is an extra shipping fee attached and altogether I was paying $20/month in Canadian dollars. A few months back, I started to think about if the price I was paying was worth the products, and I realised it wasn't. Out of the products I was receiving per month, I only really loved a few and it would have been cheaper to buy them full-sized individually.

OVERALL

Overall, I just fell out of love with my monthly bag of Ipsy goodies, although I wish it wasn't so. As a university student, I have a lot of things to be concerned about, particularly money-wise (food, gas, school supplies) and even if I were to allow $20 for make-up every month, I could certainly get more for money if I were buying from the drugstore as opposed to from the Ipsy subscription.

None of this is to say that I had a necessarily bad experience with Ipsy. In all six months of my membership, I never had a problem with being billed or with shipping. For the most part, the products were pretty good and although they weren't suited for me, they could've been suited for someone else. I'm a firm believer in doing research before committing to a service or product (hence why I made this post), but I definitely think that a service can be experienced in many different ways, and it's up to you to figure out if it suits your own personal needs!
