Where I've Been

Hello my lovelies!

Wow, it’s been awhile, hasn’t it? I’ve really neglected my little corner of the Internet and I won’t bother making up excuses why. Things have just been crazy and I’ve not been terribly good at time management as of late. But I’m back! And I promise to be more diligent. I thought today I’d just kick off with a bit of an update post, to let you all know where I’ve been and what I’ve been up to recently.

(Also, I’ve spent a chunk of time lately going through and revising my old book review posts. You can now find them all under the tab, Books > Book Review, or right here, if you’re interested in giving those a read.)

At the end of August, I made my bittersweet return home from Florida. On the one hand, I was so sad to be leaving Florida, my home away from home but on the other hand, I was eager to get back to my proper home and get back into the swing of things. My journey home was actually a bit of a milestone moment for me, as it was the first time that my boyfriend and I travelled by plane without my parents. Taking a flight alone just the two of us was huge - if you suffer from travel anxiety like me, then you’ll get why. I was so nervous about the flight, but it all went very smoothly and I’m glad to have finally gotten it out of the way.

Coming home was also a pretty big deal as it meant returning to uni. As I mentioned this summer in my ‘Why I Took A Break From University’ post, I decided to take a year-long break from school after my first year, to sort things out and put the focus on my mental health. Returning to uni was so. freaking. nervewracking. But it went quite well! I’m only taking 3 courses this term - a Jane Austen literature course, a Women’s History course, and a Mental Health & Addictions course - so my course load has been lightened a bit and I can put more of an equal focus on my studies and my mental health. If you didn’t already know, I’m working towards my Honours BA in English & Cultural Studies (a four-year program I’ve completed a year of so far) and I’ve recently added onto that a Minor in History!

Unfortunately, being back in school means less time to spend with my boyfriend. Even though we live together, we have very opposite schedules. Most days, as he’s pulling up into the driveway in his car, I’m pulling out in my own and we just wave at each other through the window. He’s also got a far heavier course load than I have, what with being a Psychology major and all. Needless to say, it’s been difficult to make time for our relationship lately. That being said, it was recently our 5-year anniversary! We’ve been together for a quarter of our lives. Time really does fly. We had a lovely anniversary dinner at a local restaurant, had a few drinks, and just enjoyed some time alone. For our anniversary, my bf gifted me the Enchanted Disney Belle diamond promise ring. It’s absolutely stunning!! I was completely speechless about how thoughtful and genuine of a gift it was.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that this past weekend was my town’s annual fall fair! I love these fairs, you guys. They’re so wonderful and autumnal and nostalgic. My town is extremely small (at least to my standards, 10,000 is small) and very proud of our history - the fair has been running since 1873 so the historic aspect of the fair is really important. As my town is in the country, it’s only right that our fair is a typical county fair, complete with a demolition derby, midway, and tons of competitions of farm animals, food, needlework, and even pumpkins and hay! I never imagined I’d live in such a small town, coming from somewhere like Mississauga, but I could never leave the small town life now. I love the country sooo much.

On a very exciting note, I finally got my hair done! Early this year (like maybe February?) I got a tiny bit of blonde put into my hair, but decided that I wanted some real blonde highlights for the summer, to lighten up my hair. I’d gotten the blonde highlights put in last summer as well, but after I had it done again this year, I just wasn’t feeling the blonde as much as before *shrugs*. So when I came home from Florida, I got my hair dyed back to a solid colour for the fall, except this time I went a shade or two darker than my natural shade and now it’s a dark chocolate brown. I LOVE IT. It feels sooo good to be a brunette again. I feel very autumnal, indeed.

So that’s really it for me. I’ve babbled on for quite a bit here haha, but oh well! In the next few weeks I’ve got a lot going on, including another trip to Florida for my reading week! We’ll be heading to the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival and Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and, as usual, I’ll be sure to post about those - especially my super-secret costume for Not So Scary!! So keep a look out for that :)

Hope you’re all doing well!

Things I Love About Christmas

fullsizerender.jpg

If you hadn't already guessed it, I am one of those people who goes into full-on Christmas mode as soon as the clock strikes 12am on November 1st. I love Christmas. My excitement starts early as in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving in October, and so our next holiday after Halloween is Christmas. This is genuinely, 100% my favourite holiday and I find there is so much to love about Christmas. In the interest of pumping myself up even more for the season, and getting all other Christmas-lovers excited, here are seven things that I love about the Christmas holidays.

The Return of the Red Lip

During September/October, I tend to put my red-lip obsession on the back burner and focus more on autumn lip colours: berries, burgundies, etc. But with Christmas around the corner, that means I can bring back out my reds and rock the classic look I love so much.

Decorating

I think my favourite time of the weeks leading up to Christmas is the decorating. My mum and I are restricted to putting up our tree at the very end of November by my dad, so we spend all of November (and admittedly, October) buying decorations and planning out how we envision our decorations in our home for the holidays. We've got a closet under the stairs full of boxes of decorations, and a Pinterest board full of ideas - we're ready to go!!

Baking

I recently tried my hand at baking my favourite autumn dessert, apple crumble, and discovered an interest in it that I didn't know I had. This year, I'm very excited to bake Christmas treats with my mum for our family, friends, and our party in December. Some of my fave Christmas treats are gingerbread cookies and chocolate fudge... yummm..... I'm getting hungry now!

Buying and Wrapping Gifts

As stressful as I find buying gifts for my loved ones (and trust me, I do find it very stressful), I love it. There's something so amazing about finding the perfect gift for a family member or your boyfriend. I love buying gifts for everyone and once I've got everything bought, I go into crazy wrapping mode - it's serious business for me! And then, it's total agony waiting because all I wanna do is give the gifts out to everyone! Haha

The Toronto Christmas Market

Last year, I visited the Toronto Christmas Market for the very first time and I fell completely in love with it (despite my toes being frozen afterwards). For those who have never been to or heard of the market, it is held in Toronto's Distillery District which is a pedestrian-only area where an old whiskey distillery once sat in the 19th century. The whole area gets decorated for Christmas, they put on shows, and they have a massive Christmas tree at the entrance. It's so fun to walk around and take photos of everything. I cannot wait to go again this year.

Christmas Music

I can't tell you how much I love Christmas music. As soon as November 1st, I'm playing Christmas tunes in the car, while I'm doing my makeup in the morning, basically any chance I get. I even have Michael Buble's Christmas album on vinyl - which by the way is amazingggg. I love to sing-along to the classics and the newer versions by some of my favourite artists.

Holiday Films

Some of my most favourite movies are Christmas themed. Love Actually, White Christmas, Elf... to name a few. My mum and I love to watch these films in November and December every year (sometimes in July, too, but shh that's a secret). We can practically quote the entire Love Actually film. I mean, who doesn't love watching Hugh Grant and Colin Firth???

What gets you excited for Christmas?

Friday Thoughts

image-11.png

Hello everyone! Lately, I've been trying to think of a way to have weekly updates here on my blog, to keep everyone up to date with my crazy, hectic life. So, I thought maybe posting little thoughts/updates every Friday might be a good way to do so, without babbling on forever and totally boring you all since I tend to do that (haha no lie). Without further ado, here is a mini look into my life as of late!

  • I've been driving around a lot recently - to class, to my boyfriend's classes, to the grocery shop, to Starbucks (which is a trek, might I add). But with all this driving, I've found that I've been really enjoying being in the car, especially on my own, which is something I totally didn't expect to happen!
  • Hey, why is it that the closest Starbucks is literally 20 mins away?? There are a ton of perks to living in a small town, but having no Starbucks nearby is not one of them. There are two Tim Horton's within five blocks, but no Starbucks. Sad Felicia.
  • I've been really into The Office lately. I know, I know, I'm sooooo behind on this one (didn't it end in like 2011 or something??? who knows) but my boyfriend and I started watching it casually in September and now we're already halfway through season three. We literally watch it every night when we go up to bed. I'm not even ashamed lol.
  • The weather here in Ontario has been so odd lately. I constantly find myself standing at the front door, thinking, Do I need a sweater? Yeah, definitely, it's 9 degrees. Maybe I should grab a coat as well, as I get quite chilly? Well, no it's going to be 22 degrees in an hour-and-a-half. So maybe I'll just blast the heat in the car and turn on the seat warmers and the steering wheel warmer??? Gah! So frustrating.
  • I know we haven't even gotten to Halloween yet, and that it's just around the corner, but lately I've been in such a Christmasy mood. All I want to do is douse the whole house in tinsel and listen to Michael Buble's Christmas album on repeat. Is that odd? Probably. (I'm actually listening to my Christmas playlist right now but shhh don't tell anyone)
  • This morning I woke up at 6:50 and had to drive my boyfriend to his 7:30 lecture, and when I came home I took a 3-HOUR NAP and now I'm feeling groggy and awful. So the moral of the story is, don't fall into the nap trap, it will only make you feel so much worse ugh
  • A couple days ago, I found a wasp in my bathroom, behind the shades. I've not likely mentioned it here before, but I have this horrible irrational fear of wasps/bees after being stung in grade 9, so finding this little intruder in my bathroom was terrifying hahaha but at least my boyfriend and my dad got a kick out of my reaction
  • I am so unbelievably excited for the Bath & Body Works winter holiday range to come out!! I've received a few emails lately of them releasing a few holiday candles here and there, and it's only made me more excited for what's yet to come. Right now they've got a Buy 3, Get 3 Free sale going on in Canada and I'm so tempted. Though, if I buy any more candles, my family may disown me. Space in our candle cabinet is getting pretty tight...
  • My boyfriend and my mum have gotten me really into Star Wars in the past year. So much so that as soon as the trailer for The Last Jedi dropped, I was watching it. Never thought I'd say that.
