Happy New Year, everyone! I hope all of you enjoyed your New Years' Eves and I hope that those of you who were drinking aren't too hungover ;). I, myself, spent the evening with my parents and boyfriend here in Florida - we ate a home-cooked meal (steak, potatoes & corn, yummm), played Cards Against Humanity and watched massive fireworks go off in my neighbourhood just after midnight. It was a fantastic evening, a great way to ring in 2016.
For many - including myself - the start of a new year is metaphorical, and synonymous with a fresh beginning. In the words of the great Natasha Bedingfield, "Today is where your book begins, the rest is still unwritten". Yes. I really did just type that.
Many people create "New Years' Resolutions" for the forthcoming year, but I don't really believe in "resolutions" as it seems that they have such a bad stigma surrounding them, that they're bound to be broken by January 3rd - at the latest. Instead, I refuse to call anything by the name of "resolutions", and I make up my own personal goals for the year. Without further ado, here are my 2016 goals!
1) Become healthier and more in shape
It has become disappointingly apparent to myself recently that I have been eating really crap the past 6 months specifically, and I've not been exercising as much as I should be. So, in the new year, I plan to create an exercise planner that will assist me in keeping myself on track
2) Leave the past, in the past
The first bit of 2015, most specifically, was not the greatest. And when you go through hard times, it's easy to get completely, perpetually wrapped up in those moments. Which I have done. And it really just ruins your overall mood to be harping on about such horrible things. That's why I vow this year to move on and focus solely on the present and the future, for my own sake. There's no point in letting terrible people distract you from enjoying your life
3) Take care of myself
This includes drinking more water, getting a good night's sleep, sometimes putting myself first. It might seem basic, but making sure you're okay can sometimes take a backseat to the bigger (more stressful) things in your life. I have a tendency to put everything and everyone before my own well-being, but I intend of giving myself a break a bit more often this year
4) Read more often
Reading has always been something I'm incredibly passionate about and at one point, it was one of the most important things to me. But the past year or so, I've been so wrapped up in school, homework, extra-curricular activities and spending time with family/my boyfriend/my boyfriend's family, that I haven't given myself much of a chance to just relax and read. Since I've just recently created a list of all the books I want to read before I turn 20 years old (most of which are classic literature), I've decided to dedicate more of my time to reading than before in the new year
5) Try new things
Whether this be trying a new restaurant, learning a new language, going downtown by myself, trying a different type of food than my typical dishes - my goal is simply to broaden my horizons, to step out of my comfort zone and see what lingers beyond. It's exciting to do something out-of-the-ordinary on occasion
