Welcome to the New Blog

IMG_2314.jpg

Hello everyone!

Today is a very exciting day! You've probably noticed that my blog looks extremely different today. If you missed my latest post, last Thursday, then let me fill you in. I've switched platforms! My blog is now officially located at SquareSpace. Making the switch from WordPress was definitely a lot of work, but it was a pretty seamless process which I plan on writing up a post about the transition soon!

As you can see, there's a lot that has changed on this new blog. There are still some minor details to be tweaked over time, but for the most part, you're looking at The New and Improved Bookish Brunette!! How exciting is that? Take a poke around, stay for awhile. I hope you enjoy it!

Moving forward, I'll be going back to posting regularly, as I now have the time and space to do so! My blog schedule will be: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Phew. That's a lot! But I have a lot of posts to make this summer and I definitely want to keep you updated.

Hope you enjoyed your weekend!

Room Tour

When I first moved into my new house a year ago, I knew automatically that my favourite room would be my bedroom. In my old house, my bedroom was bigger than what I currently had, but it was awkwardly shaped which made decorating it sorta complicated. But this room is a perfect rectangular shape and the previous owners put in adorable wall stickers and wallpaper so I was very excited to put my personal touch on it. Since I've finally got all my stuff in order, how I like it, I thought I'd share with you guys a lil room tour!!

img_1159.jpg

My bedding set is a fairly new addition to the room - we actually just bought it a few months ago. My old bedding was starting to get old, plus it was yellow to go with the walls of my old bedroom, but now it didn't work. I went onto Wayfair and for an AMAZING deal, I ordered a 10-piece set that came with sheets, pillowcases, shams, an accent pillow, and a throw. Pretty good, right?? I've also got another accent pillow on there from Disney Parks, which has Minnie and Mickey watching the fireworks and it says "My Happy Place Is With You" which I thought was pretty perfect for my bf and I :)

As a little ~accent~ to the bed, I've got little fairy lights strung at the top of the headboard. I think it's super cute and really makes the room feel cozy! I've also got a strand on the top of my dresser. You can pretty much pick these up at any store nowadays, but I got mine (which are battery-powered and have a timer option) in a pack of like 5 strands for about $15 from Costco which is the best deal I've seen.

img_1158.jpg

Also on my bed is this cute lil pink tray with a gold pattern on it. I picked this up from Home Sense awhile back for under $20 and it's a lovely addition to the room.

img_1161.jpg

My dresser is from Ikea (much like the majority of my furniture) and it's got a ton of drawer space which is a blessing when you've got a shit load of clothes and have to share with your bf haha. On top of my dresser, I've got a few things. I have these matching fake white flowers in little copper pots. I also have two boxes - the one on the left is my jewellery box, and the one on the right is my boyfriend's watch box. Please take notice of how his is bigger than mine.... ANYWAY I've also got this absolutely adorable Cinderella pumpkin coach jewelry box that my bf's parents bought me for my 16th birthday!!

img_1162.jpg

Also I've got this adorbs pic of Steven and I at our senior prom on my dresser :)

img_1163.jpg

This is a bit of a work in progress.... Buuut I've got this cute photo collage thingy hanging on the wall. What do you call these things? Frankly I haven't the slightest clue. Oh well! Anyway, ideally, this will be a board to showcase all our travels. So far, I've got my 3 fave pics from trips with my bf - one of us in Times Square NYC, one of us in Magic Kingdom (my FAVE pic), and one of us in Epcot. On the right, I've got some polaroids, a ticket to Chicago the Musical, and a ticket to the Johnny Cash Museum. And then other side has the wristbands to the Mickey's Not So Scary Party, a London Tube map, and these cute Star Wars pins of Han Solo and Leia. I love this board and can't wait to update it as time goes on!!

img_1160.jpg

My bedside table is super minimalistic and uncluttered which is justtttt how I like it. I actually wrote a post on my Bedside Table essentials a few months back, which you can read here. My lamp is...believe it or not....from Walmart!! I was shocked when I saw it and for the price, how could I not pick it up? Ya gurl's on a budget. It looks really sophisticated and I love the rose gold accent. My boyfriend has one on his side because matching is crucial y'all. The table is from Ikea... I keep a book on there, so I can do some reading before bed (which is when I get most of my reading done) and usually a glass of water but that's not in the pic lol.

img_1164.jpg

My vanity table sits on the far wall, underneath the window. I won't go too much into detail because I plan on doing a vanity tour post in the near-ish future. My vanity is from Ikea (shocker!!) and so is the chair with it. I love how this fits so perfectly below the window cause I have the natural light coming in when I do my makeup in the morning, as the sun rises on this side of the house.

img_1165.jpg

As for artwork, I have the three pieces above my bed which are from Ikea (I told you everything was from there) and then I've got this lovely little set up in the corner of my room. The Audrey Wall has two collage photos of Audrey Hepburn - the top I bought in Times Square last year on my trip to NYC and the bottom one was a gift from a friend a billion years ago. I loveeeee this area of my room, especially because it sits right beside my vanity.

So, that's my bedroom, as it currently stands. I'd like to do little additions here and there as time goes on, but I have a feeling this is how it's gonna look for awhile yet! Hope you enjoyed this lil sneak peek, behind the blogger sort of post!

A Bit of Change...

img_1281-e1517683038764.jpg

Soo as you may or may not have noticed, there's been a bit of an adjustment to my blog. The Coffee Chatter is no more. I'd like to introduce you all to Bookish Brunette.

I've made quite a few changes to my blog name over the years. I've been The Toronto Girl, and then when that didn't suit me anymore, I became The Coffee Chatter. But it never really felt quite right. I've humming and hawing over this for months and months and months. And then it hit me. I love books. Something with books or literature in the title would surely suit me best.

And so, Bookish Brunette was born.

This feels right. I think that, honestly, this is my forever blog title. I've already secured Instagram and Twitter usernames, and I'm ready to fully commit to my blog. Woohoo!

So, I'm excited to embark on this ~new~ journey with all of you!

What's In My Handbag? | 2018

img_1115.jpg
img_1116.jpg

As I recently received a new handbag for Christmas, which I've been using on a day-to-day basis, I thought I was due for a "What's in my Bag" update. I've posted two of these in the past, one in 2015 and one in 2017.

Handbag: My handbag is by Kate Spade. It's a rich, wine-coloured medium sized bag with two short straps and one detachable shoulder strap. I always like having a long shoulder strap on handbags, as I find it easier to manage when I'm out shopping. The outside of the bag has a perforated floral print, with a zip-top closure, and the interior has two slide pockets and one zippered pocket.

Purse: My purse actually is the matching wallet for my handbag. My parents gifted it to me for Christmas, as they knew my boyfriend had bought me the handbag. It folds down the centre and has a button closure. It is extremely functional. It has 13 credit card slots, as well as a window slot, 4 slots for cash, and a zipper on the back for loose change. Inside the purse, I've got the essentials - my credit card, debit card, driver's license, OHIP health insurance card, Social Insurance card, and CAA card - as well as some rewards cards, like my DocuPet card, Scene rewards cards, Starbucks card, and Air Miles card. I've also got my student ID card tucked into one of my cash slots.

img_1117.jpg

Glasses: I've got two pairs of glasses in my purse. My proper glasses, which are Ralph Lauren and are kept inside a hard case, and my sunglasses, which are prescription Ray Ban and are kept in a softer case.

Coffee cosy: The idea of a coffee cosy may sound so odd/useless to some people (including my dad haha) but I frankly think it's terribly cute. In case you don't know, coffee cosies are little knitted sleeves you put around your coffee cup so you don't have to directly hold a scalding cup. Mine's created by Catherine Mason and it says, "I Drink Coffee Like A Gilmore" - a very true statement.

Hand sanitizer: Hand sanitizer is essential, especially during the winter cold/flu season. I always keep a small bottle of Purell hand sanitizer in my bag. I always make sure to apply some when I'm out and about, especially when I'm about to eat anything.

Gum: I've currently got two types of gum in my bag haha. I've got a pack of Excel White Bubblemint gum, which has been a favourite of mine for a long time (it was even included in my 2015 handbag post). I also have a pack of 5 Spearmint gum in there, as I find that chewing super-minty gum can help calm down my anxiety.

Lipstick: I literally always have at the very least one tube of lipstick in my bag. Sometimes I've got like 6 in there at a time haha. Currently, I've got the L'Oreal Paris Collection Exclusive in Blake's Red and a mini tube of Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint in Birthday Suit.

Keychain: Before, I kept so many things dangling on my keychain, it was a mess haha. Now I've only got a few things: my key fob (no key, as my car is push-to-start), my two house keys, and a cute matching accessory of Minnie Mouse, which my boyfriend has the Mickey Mouse one of. All of these things are hanging on the end bit of my university lanyard.

What have you got in your handbag?

Friday Thoughts: Getting Back into Things...

img_1078-1.jpeg

Hi everybody! As lovely as my holidays were, it's definitely nice to be back to blogging on a regular schedule. And to end off my first week back to blogging is my Friday Thoughts post!

  • Monday was an absolutely crazy day. My family and I walked outside of our house to find rushing water throughout the entire garage. It looked as though we'd had a gas leak. We went into full-on panic mode - grabbed the dog, called 911, and ran across the street. One hour and two firetrucks later, we found out it was actually a water pipe that had burst and was mixing with gas that was leaking from a can my dad uses to fill the snowblower. It was so terrifying but thankfully it wasn't anything in the end.
  • This dreary weather has already begun to get me down... I'm so eager for spring weather. Thankfully, we've had a huge bout of rain and warm-ish weather which has melted most of the snow. This summer-lovin' gal is soo over winter.
  • I've been recently binge-watching The Royals with my boyfriend and mum, and New Girl on my own. I had started to watch The Royals awhile back but then forgot about it. We've finally nearly gotten caught up. But I've been especially into New Girl. I love Zooey Deschanel, and especially love her as Jess Day.
  • On Wednesday, I got a chance to go out and have brunch with my very close friend who I have not seen in well over a month. It was so lovely to catch-up over my favourite breakfast, eggs benedict. I always love reuniting with friends, especially when I haven't seen them in forever!
  • My mum got a chance to rummage through my grandma's old photo albums this week whilst visiting her in Hamilton. She took some pics of the best ones, and that night we took a trip down memory lane, where I realised from photos like this one that I've got the same hairdo now as I did when I was a kid lol

Well, that's it for this week. I hope you all have a marvellous weekend!

Lots of love

Holiday Catch-Up

img_1018.jpg

Hello everyone! How are you all doing today? I'm currently writing to you from the comfort of my sofa in Florida, where it is drizzly and freezing outside - not the sort of weather I was hoping as my send off. I'm also feeling quite poorly, as I've got a sore throat and a wicked earache today. But since today is my last day of vacay, I thought it'd be a good opportunity to catch you all up on what I've been up to on my Christmas/New Year's break in a journal-style post.

My vacation started on Christmas Day. My family did our usual Christmas morning thing - waking up early, having egg sandwiches for breaky, then opening presents. Then we cleaned up quick and hustled on over Mississauga, where we spent an hour hanging out with some of Steven's family. It's always nice that we get to see them on Christmas, before we head off for the holidays.

Around noon-ish, we said our goodbyes and headed to Buffalo, New York to catch our flight. We normally fly out of Buffalo as it's a) cheaper and b) way easier than travelling from Pearson Airport. This year, we flew with Jet Blue which was a god sent cause they have those little tv screens on the back of the seats that play tv shows and films. I was thrilled to find out that they were playing The Santa Clause on Freeform as I hate flying (despite years of air travel experience) and it was a nice distraction for my anxiety.

When we got to Florida, we had our second part of our Christmas tradition - more prezzies and a screening of The Polar Express. A perfect ending to a wonderful Christmas.

img_0958.jpg
fullsizerender-3.jpeg

On Boxing Day, we headed over to Disney's Grand Floridian resort - aka my favourite Disney hotel - for brunch at the Grand Floridian Cafe. I absolutely love the Cafe. The eggs benedict is very yummmmm. I always love walking around the Grand Floridian and 'oohing' and 'awing' over the wedding pavilion! We spent the afternoon monorail resort hopping so we could see all of the Christmas decorations. I love to see all the trees and especially the Grand Floridian life-size gingerbread house.

img_0233.jpeg

We also popped into Disney Springs to see the Christmas Tree Trail!

Of course, we made a trip to Magic Kingdom on our trip. It was the first chilly night of the trip, but still, it was bearable. Gave me an excuse to wear my favourite holiday Olaf sweatshirt, with my new Christmas Mickey ears. We got to ride Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise - which was Christmas decorated and they called it Jingle Cruise which was GREAT. And no Magic Kingdom trip is complete without watching the Happily Ever After fireworks on Main Street with a Starbucks coffee in hand!

Unfortunately, my anxiety popped in to visit on the night I was supposed to be going to Epcot - my favourite Disney park - and I had to have a stay-in night instead. Boo :(

fullsizerender-4.jpeg

But the next day, I made it out to Hollywood Studios for the evening and we had a ton of fun despite freezing our asses off!!!! It was about 14 degrees Celsius which is super cold for Florida and I was wearing a t-shirt, a cardigan, and jeans - yet I was frozen. I ended up buying a super cute Stormtrooper sweater AND a Minnie & Mickey Mouse blanket which I wrapped around me. We pretty much just walked around, had some coffee, and then watched the Star Wars fireworks show - which was soooo cool. Every time I saw Leia, I pretty much cried.

New Year's Eve was spent the way it always is for my family. A big dinner at home, a round of Cards Against Humanity, and watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve when the ball dropped. Usually, we get to play Cards Against Humanity outside in our backyard but it was like 9 degrees out this year so we had to stay indoors which was kind of a bummer. But we made the best of it! On New Year's Day, my parents went out for dinner with their good friend who lives in Orlando, as they do every year. My boyfriend and I stayed in, ordered some pizza, and watched Riverdale in our pjs. The perfect night!

Now I'm at the end of my trip. Sad :( Today, I was lucky enough to get to pop out to go to Books A Million, where they were having a 'buy 2 get the third free' sale. I was in literal heaven. I was on a book buying break for all of December because of Christmas coming up. So now that I'm free of that, I'm ready to buy every book in sight! I purchased The Girls by Emma Cline, My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella, and Paris for One & Other Stories by Jojo Moyes. I'm already forty pages into The Girls!

I hope everyone had an incredible holiday break! I'll be back to my regular scheduling of posts by next week.

2017 Goals

img_1012.jpg

I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions. I feel like every year, we create these expectations for ourselves that we make ourselves feel horrible for when we don't stick with them. However, I definitely believe in writing out a few things I'd like to try to accomplish with the span of the year. For me, goal-setting can be really beneficial to my overall success so, here are the goals I'm setting for myself this year.

Create - and stick to - a TBR list

Oddly enough, considering how often I read and how much I enjoy it, I've never actually prepared a proper TBR list. Weird, right? I'm the kind of person to buy a new book I want to read, then put it on my evergrowing pile of unread books and reread the Harry Potter series for the billionth time instead. But not this year. I've already gone ahead and created my first-draft TBR list - which I'm sure will be added to once my favourite authors start to release new novels!

Declutter my wardrobe

It's time. It's time to say goodbye to the fraying, stretched-out pair of jeans I wear way too often and should've tossed months ago. It's time to part ways with the terribly worn out sweater I've owned since I was fourteen. I always hate to go through my wardrobe and declutter, as I hold onto everything because of sentimental value. But since I moved, my closet space is a third of what I used to have and now I have to share the space with my boyfriend - so it's time. Luckily, there are some things that I don't need that are still in good shape that someone else might need that I will be donating.

Reading challenge

This year, I'm challenging myself to read 50 books. Yes, you read that right. Fifty. Five zero. It seems crazy, I know, but I think I can do it! Goodreads allows you to set a goal and then once you record the books you've finished on the app or site, they add that book to your goal. I did this reading challenge for the first time last year and exceeded my goal of 17 with ease. This year, I'm up for a real challenge.

Rediscovering my creativity

This last year was a bit of a dud for me when it comes to writing. I had my heart set on making major progress on my novel, but it never happened. I was feeling a complete lack of inspiration. So, this year, I'm ready for a new creativity boost. I am convinced that comes from broadening my horizons. That means new spaces for writing, new adventures, and new experiences.

Respect the skin

The first half of last year, I did not stick to a skincare routine at all. I treated my skin like crap, if I'm honest. I finally started to treat my skin with some respect in the last few months of 2017 and I could almost immediately see the difference - my acne was disappearing and my stubborn acne scars have almost vanished. I've definitely learned my lesson. I'm carrying this skincare routine on over to 2018 and sticking to it for good.

1 Second Everyday

I am a big fan of the 1 Second Everyday app. I think it's a really cool idea. If you've never heard of it, it's an app where you take a one-second-long video every day and then you can put the videos into a compilation - pretty explanatory, right? I first heard of it from Zoella on Twitter about a year ago (who has since posted a video from 1 Second Everyday to show her year of being twenty-six). I'm determined to post a second every day for the entire year!

Focus on my health

I have the worst immune system. Ever. It's honestly awful. I've always had a poor immune system and this year, I'm going to be taking steps towards improving my that as well as my overall health. It's time to def get my health into check!

Happy New Year's to all!

Reflecting on 2017

Happy New Year everybody!!

2017 is officially behind us. Hasta la vista! My final year of being a teen is gone. Yikes.

Every year, as a new year is upon me, I like to reflect on the past year. It's always good to reflect on the good times, even the bad ones, before you move on. I thought I'd share some of my favourite and some of my not-so-favourite moments of 2017 with you guys!

1) Moving House

The first half of this year was a whirlwind. It was full of moving boxes, tape guns, and bubble wrap as I packed up all my belongings and prepared to move out of my house. The move was a huge adjustment. It's always going to be a hard time moving out of the house you grew up in. I was so uneasy about the idea of leaving my house, leaving my hometown, and the life I was so familiar with. But, in the end, moving away was such an amazing decision for myself and my family. It introduced me to a town I absolutely adore. I'm so in love with my house. It's been such an incredible experience, all around. My family's so happy!

2) New York City

New York City. Wow. One of my favourite cities in the whole world. I immediately fell in love back when I visited for the first time in 2009, and ever since my last trip in 2010, I've been dying to return. This past spring, my family finally booked another trip back - but this time with my boyfriend, an NYC newbie. I was so thrilled to see New York again, especially since this time I had the opportunity to show my boyfriend around.

Read about my travels: here, here, here, and here

3) Anxiety

This year, my anxiety was at an all-time high. I spent the better part of this year suffering from severe anxiety, social and general. After many, many years of battling this disorder, this was the year I finally said, 'Enough is enough'. It was time for me to focus on myself, and take a step forward in bettering my mental health, for the first time in pretty much ever. It's been a hell of a hard time, but I'm glad to have finally taken this step, and I'm ready to see what I can accomplish in the new year!

4) Disney

Of course, Disney has been a huge part of my year, just like it has been for the majority of my life. I think my love for Disney grew immensely this year - if it's even possible for it to grow any more! I have found a new admiration for the parks, the resort, and all things Disney-related. For the first time in nearly a decade, I got to stay on property at the parks, at Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort in August. I stayed with my boyfriend and it was our first ever trip together alone as a couple. It was so fun to show him around, as he'd never stayed on property before, and to experience all the things about staying at the resorts that I loved so much as a kid. We're already saving up for our trip in 2018!

Keep up to date with my Disney travels on my Disney Instagram account: here

5) Friends & Family

This year, my relationships with my friends and family have become so much closer and so important to me. When you're struggling with a mental illness, as I am, it can be so hard to keep up with your friends as you're constantly feeling blah. But my friends have been so amazing this past year. They're the kind of friends that you know will be with you through thick and thin - you always know they're there for you, no matter what. I am so grateful for my friends, but also for my supportive boyfriend and parents. I honestly don't know what the hell I'd do without them :) haha

I am so eager to see what 2018 has in store for me. I'm not a firm believer in resolutions - in fact, I hardly believe in them at all - but I definitely have a few things I'm going to hold myself to in the new year, which I look forward to sharing with you all! I hope you all have a very fun, very safe New Year's Eve. I'll talk to you very soon!!

What I Got For Christmas (+ Life Update)

img_0958.jpg

Hello everybody! Merry Christmas to you! I hope that you all had a wonderful day yesterday with your family and your loved ones. I love to read other people's 'What I Got for Christmas' posts. I don't know about you, but there's something so lovely about hearing people so excited to share what they were gifted. I know that some people find these posts to be braggy, but I don't think that at all. I love haul posts, and why should these kind of posts be any different? I def don't want to come off as a 'show off' or anything. I am genuinely so grateful for everything that everyone gifted me. I have the most generous, kind, giving family and boyfriend ever - not to brag or anything haha. If you're as nosy as I am about what others receive for Christmas, then keep reading to hear about some of the things I was gifted this holiday season!

Kate Spade Cameron Street Perforated Large Lanemy boyfriend gifted me this beautiful red-wine-coloured Kate Spade purse. I'm in love! It's the perfect size for day-to-day outings (shopping, going out for coffee, etc.) and I love that it has a shoulder strap. I especially love the perforated rose decal on the purse's exterior. My parents also gifted me the matching wallet so now I feel very put together when I'm out and about!

Soap and Glory The Righteous ButterI mentioned my love for The Righteous Butter back in my September Favourites post. I won't go too much into this one since I've already done so in my favourites post. My parents slipped this into my stocking this year and I was so jazzed when I found it in there! Haha. I already have a tub of this, but I asked for another so that I wouldn't run out anytime soon.

Funko PopsI got a ton of Funko Pops this Christmas. I've been making a list of them that I want to collect for months now and I've already got a whole set-up planned out in my head, so I'm glad to finally have some to get started with! I received Belle (Beauty and the Beast 2017), Maui (Moana),Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks), Lorelai Gilmore(Gilmore Girls), Rory Gilmore(Gilmore Girls), and Sookie St. James(Gilmore Girls). I have a lot of organizing to do!

Juniper BooksIf you've never heard of Juniper Books before, you're missing out. Juniper sells custom books and collections - essentially hardcover books with beautiful front covers and dust jackets. I fell in love with them earlier this year and received a bunch from my boyfriend for my birthday. But this holiday, my parents bought me three Charles Dickens books - Great Expectations, Bleak House, and A Tale of Two Cities from the Make Your Own Literary Classics set.

Origins Out of Trouble 10 Minute Mask to Rescue Problem SkinI am very very very excited to use this product! I have heard really good things about this face mask and Origins as a brand. You may know through previous posts that I have been having some pretty substantial issues with my skin as of late.... in short, my skin and I are not simpatico at the moment. Hopefully, this mask comes to the rescue!

Too Faced Peach Blur Translucent Smoothing Finishing PowderI just love Too Faced's peach products. Don't we all? The Sweet Peach palette is something I constantly reach for in my makeup drawer, and now I'm excited to add this powder to my collection. I've already used this a couple of times and I absolutely love it.

I cannot describe how grateful I am for everything I received this year. My parents have always been very generous with their gift-giving and I am so glad that I'm old enough to give back to them every Christmas season - with gifts bigger than 'DIY soup in a jar' (yup, my parents received that about 11 years ago - be jelly).

On another note, I thought I'd quickly update all of you on what's going on in my little world. Posts are going to be more disorganized for the next couple weeks as I am currently on vacay with my parents and my boyfriend in Orlando, Florida! I'm trying to write out some posts while I have a free moment, but obviously, it's been go-go-go ever since we touched down in Orlando on Christmas and I can't keep up like I usually can. I will write up some posts on what I've gotten up to and hopefully upload those soon... It's moments like these that make me wonder if I should start posting again on my YouTube channel.....

I'll def see you guys before the New Year but until then, have a wonderful holiday break!

P.S. I'd love to hear what you guys got for Christmas! Lemme know in the comments :)

Friday Thoughts: Pre-Christmas Mayhem

img_0409.jpg

I'm so very sorry that this post is up late! I'd meant to have it out last night but it just wasn't meant to be. I've had such a crazy week, I just ran out of time! But better late than never, I always say!

  • Christmas is so close!! Good gracious. December goes by in the blink of an eye, doesn't it? I feel like I've a million things left to do. Christmas time seems to be largely about being busy for me haha
  • I've finally seen Star Wars: The Last Jedi!! The four of us (my parents, my bf, and I) went out to see it at the VIP theatre on Tuesday because tickets were super cheap and we love to have a ~special~ drink with our film haha. Leading up to seeing this film, we rewatched the original 3 films plus The Force Awakens, so we were pumped. Despite mixed reviews, we all really really enjoyed it! I thought they did a good job at staying true to the Star Wars storyline, without seeming so repetitive. I also liked that there were some humorous bits, like the first bit of the film (I won't say what it was for the sake of those who haven't seen it yet!).
  • My boyfriend and I had a lovely dinner with his parents to celebrate Christmas in the middle of this past week. We decided to meet at a restaurant about 40 mins away from my house and exchange gifts. We had a great time, and I was very spoiled by Steven's parents as they gifted me a super cute Roots poncho with a huge loose turtleneck (which I love) and a pair of adorable slipper booties!
  • I'm loving the snow. As I've mentioned, I'm all for a white Christmas. I had a bit of a worry at the beginning/middle of this week as the snow completely melted away. Like, I'm talking most of the snow was gone. I was so bummed out, I was hoping for a miracle at that point. And then it happened! Thursday night, the snow came and there is now a fresh blanket of beautiful white snow on my town. I'm major heart-eyes right now.
  • My grandma came by later in the week to celebrate Christmas with my family, which was so nice as we haven't seen her as often now that she no longer lives with us. Since my boyfriend had to leave the next day to spend the weekend at home with his own family, we decided to exchange our gifts on that night - and my parents were so lovely as they did not only a stocking for me but also one for my boyfriend to carry on one of my favourite traditions to us. Some of my favourite bits from the stocking were the Too Faced Lip Injection Glossy in 'Milkshake', the heavenly Soap & Glory The Righteous Butter, and afelt pennantwith my university name on it, which I've always wanted. My boyfriend spoiled me rotten this year - he gifted me a beautiful wine-coloured Kate Spade purse and a Beauty and the Beast 2017 Soundtrack Vinyl Record which made me legit emotional lol

I hope you all have a marvellous Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! I'll speak to you all very very soon! Happy holidays :)

My Christmas Traditions

Every family has their own Christmas traditions. I think it makes the holidays so much more special when your family has their very own ways of celebrating it. I always love to hear what other people do with their families to celebrate Christmas, so today I thought I would share with all of you my very own traditions!

Baking

A big tradition in my house for Christmas time is baking. My mum's the baker in the house so she has always done all of it, but this year I chipped in for the first time to help. Baked Christmas treats are simply the best, aren't they? Favourites in our house are chocolate chip cookies (from my mum's ~secret~ recipe), fudge, and gingerbread men.

Stockings

I'm not sure if it's so common to do stockings anymore? Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. But in my family, stockings have always been a staple. Until this year, I was the only one who had a stocking filled and placed under the tree. But this year, all four of us are taking part in the tradition which makes it so much more fun! Leading up to Christmas, we leave our stockings up to hang and then Christmas morning, they're put under the tree and it's the very first thing opened before any presents.

Florida

Since 2012, a huge tradition for my family has been visiting our vacation home in Orlando over the winter break. Every year, we leave for Florida after we've finished the festivities of Christmas morning, and stay until just after New Year's Day. I love our Florida tradition. One of the greatest parts of it is that we are able to experience all of what Disney World has to offer during the holiday season. As you all probably know by now, my family are huge Disney fans so it's hugely important to us.

Decorating

Decorating the house for Christmas is a huuuggeeeee part of our traditions. As a family, we love to decorate for the holidays. And especially now that we've moved into our new place, we've got even more areas to decorate! We went crazy with it all this year, but it looks incredible if I do say so myself :) My personal favourite addition is our Disney tree (the tree on the right, below).

The Polar Express

Ever since the film came out, my family has exclusively watched The Polar Express just once per year. It started off as Christmas Eve tradition. We'd come home from my Nonno's (Italian word for grandpa) house after Christmas Eve dinner and we'd put the film on. As the years went by, Christmas Eve dinner went later and later, so we eventually decided we'd watch The Polar Express once we got to Florida on Christmas Day. In the past few years, my boyfriend has been able to partake in the tradition as well which is so amazing. I love that we save watching it for only that night because it makes it so much more special.

What are your Christmas traditions?

Friday Thoughts: Love Actually + Approaching Holidays

img_0495.jpg

Happy Friday everyone, welcome back! Hope you've all had a fabulous week. This week has been chock-full and so exciting, I'm excited to share it with you all!

  • I hate road closures whilst driving. Detours make me so uneasy - I just don't like not knowing where I'm going. I had to drive my bf to his exam on Saturday and I pulled up to the main road I take to school to find it was closed all weekend. So, I followed the detour, whilst screaming. I genuinely had a moment of panic like "oh my god my bf is going to miss his exam" - despite the fact that we were like two hours ahead of schedule. I basically looked like this:
  • We got our first real snowfall of the season!! I've been dying for a good snowfall for like ages (I even mentioned this in last week's Friday Thoughts). It's been so lovely to drive around and see that thick blanket of snow on the ground and on rooftops. It was the good, fluffy kind of snow, too.
  • My mum and I had a girls' night out on Monday evening to see Love Actually play at the VIP movie theatre in Burloak. At first, I was worried we may not even make it, as there was a ton of traffic due to the snow. But all was well. It was a great evening of laughter and a few fun drinks.
  • CHRISTMAS IS NEXT WEEKEND!!! WHAT?? Next week is gonna be crazy busy. My boyfriend and I've got exams to finish up, we're seeing Star Wars: The Last Jedi in theatres (any Star Wars fans out there?), we're having dinner with my bf's parents, and we're having dinner with my parents and grandma. My boyfriend goes home Friday for his own family Christmas celebrations and then Sunday is Christmas eve!!! Time's going by so quick. Hopefully, I'll have a moment of peace to fill you guys in on how it all goes.
  • Did anyone catch Harry Styles on tv being particularly cute whilst filling in for James Corden on his talk-show?? I watched a bit online afterwards. Nearly six years since I first was introduced to One Direction, and I still find Harry so adorable.

Have a great weekend everybody! Hopefully, you all have a relaxing weekend ahead of ya :)

Friday Thoughts: Harry Potter + Snow

Happy Friday to you all! Another Friday... jeez, before we all know it, it will be Christmas Eve. Who's excited for Christmas!? I know I am. Seeing all of the Blogmas posts from blogs I follow has only amplified my excitement. Maybe I'll have to partake in Blogmas next year....? We'll have to wait and see! But, for now, here's my weekly update for you.

  • I've started to re-read the Harry Potter series! I'm not really sure why, but I suddenly got into a very Harry Potter mood this week. I watched the first and then the final films last night, and today I've been lounging around in my Ron Weasley sweater, reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. I'm already onto Chamber of Secrets lol
  • A few weeks back, on Black Friday weekend, I ordered two vinyl records from Urban Outfitters as there was a ridiculous sale on records (something like "buy one, get one 50% off"). SO I ordered the Moulin Rouge and the 500 Days of Summer soundtracks. Flash forward to this week, they still hadn't sent a shipping confirmation or anything so I started to panic. Then they said 500 Days of Summer was back-ordered. So Moulin Rouge unexpectedly arrived yesterday afternoon. And today, 500 Days of Summer arrived... along with another copy of Moulin Rouge hahaha, so I guess I have two copies now??
  • Exam season is upon us! I get lucky every time, being an English major who takes a lot of online classes and classes that prefer final papers over exams - I only get two or three exams per term. But my boyfriend isn't so blessed. He has two exams tomorrow, one mid-day and then the other at night. So tomorrow will be a sucky day for him :(
  • There is snow expected for tomorrow and I could not be any more excited. I love the first good snowfall of the season. I've been eagerly awaiting our first snowfall for weeks now, after a fifteen-min snow tease last month. My family thinks I'm nuts (they're not snow lovers). I don't even really like snow. I just like it in December, but once Christmas is over, I'm like bye.
  • I'm getting very excited for my trip to Florida. We live Christmas day, as usual, and I can't wait to see all that Disney has in store for this magical Christmas season. I truly believe that Disney wins when it comes to holiday decor. I just love to see all their decorations - I promise to share it all with you guys!

Friday Thoughts

image-11.png

Hello everyone! Lately, I've been trying to think of a way to have weekly updates here on my blog, to keep everyone up to date with my crazy, hectic life. So, I thought maybe posting little thoughts/updates every Friday might be a good way to do so, without babbling on forever and totally boring you all since I tend to do that (haha no lie). Without further ado, here is a mini look into my life as of late!

  • I've been driving around a lot recently - to class, to my boyfriend's classes, to the grocery shop, to Starbucks (which is a trek, might I add). But with all this driving, I've found that I've been really enjoying being in the car, especially on my own, which is something I totally didn't expect to happen!
  • Hey, why is it that the closest Starbucks is literally 20 mins away?? There are a ton of perks to living in a small town, but having no Starbucks nearby is not one of them. There are two Tim Horton's within five blocks, but no Starbucks. Sad Felicia.
  • I've been really into The Office lately. I know, I know, I'm sooooo behind on this one (didn't it end in like 2011 or something??? who knows) but my boyfriend and I started watching it casually in September and now we're already halfway through season three. We literally watch it every night when we go up to bed. I'm not even ashamed lol.
  • The weather here in Ontario has been so odd lately. I constantly find myself standing at the front door, thinking, Do I need a sweater? Yeah, definitely, it's 9 degrees. Maybe I should grab a coat as well, as I get quite chilly? Well, no it's going to be 22 degrees in an hour-and-a-half. So maybe I'll just blast the heat in the car and turn on the seat warmers and the steering wheel warmer??? Gah! So frustrating.
  • I know we haven't even gotten to Halloween yet, and that it's just around the corner, but lately I've been in such a Christmasy mood. All I want to do is douse the whole house in tinsel and listen to Michael Buble's Christmas album on repeat. Is that odd? Probably. (I'm actually listening to my Christmas playlist right now but shhh don't tell anyone)
  • This morning I woke up at 6:50 and had to drive my boyfriend to his 7:30 lecture, and when I came home I took a 3-HOUR NAP and now I'm feeling groggy and awful. So the moral of the story is, don't fall into the nap trap, it will only make you feel so much worse ugh
  • A couple days ago, I found a wasp in my bathroom, behind the shades. I've not likely mentioned it here before, but I have this horrible irrational fear of wasps/bees after being stung in grade 9, so finding this little intruder in my bathroom was terrifying hahaha but at least my boyfriend and my dad got a kick out of my reaction
  • I am so unbelievably excited for the Bath & Body Works winter holiday range to come out!! I've received a few emails lately of them releasing a few holiday candles here and there, and it's only made me more excited for what's yet to come. Right now they've got a Buy 3, Get 3 Free sale going on in Canada and I'm so tempted. Though, if I buy any more candles, my family may disown me. Space in our candle cabinet is getting pretty tight...
  • My boyfriend and my mum have gotten me really into Star Wars in the past year. So much so that as soon as the trailer for The Last Jedi dropped, I was watching it. Never thought I'd say that.

What's In My Handbag? | 2017

fullsizerender-5.jpg

I can't believe that it's been two full years since I last uploaded a "what's in my bag" post! So much has changed since 2015. Especially since there have been a ton of changes in my lifestyle since I was sixteen/seventeen years old. I think that now is as good as time as any to do a refresher post!

The Bag

Currently, I am using a black Kate Spade bowling-style bag. I bought it a couple years ago in a massive Fourth of July sale at Kate Spade and I still use it often. It's got gold hardware and a long strap, as well as two shorter straps at the top. I typically use the longer strap as I can just toss it over my shoulder and go on my way without being restricted in movement or anything. It carries quite a bit, which is a lot coming from me because I am typically a big handbag kinda gal and this one leans more to the smaller side in my opinion. It has three interior pockets, one with a zipper and two without, which is perfect for me. Although I usually like to have dividers in my purses so that I can separate stuff into sections, I quite like the open space of this as I'm able to fit a ton more things inside.

Contents

fullsizerender-21.jpg

Being an English major, it's probably no surprise to anyone that I always (and I do mean always) have a book in my handbag. As of late, that book has been The Marriage Plot by Jeffery Eugenides. I basically pull this out whenever I'm alone in a waiting room, or on public transportation, or anything like that. I also like to carry around this mini journal with a pen, so that if I have anything I need to jot down like blog post ideas or novel ideas, I can get it down on paper before I forget!

fullsizerender-1.jpg

One of the biggest changes from my 2015 post to this one is that I now have to carry around glasses! About a year ago, I was persuaded by my boyfriend to go and have an eye exam for the first time in many, many years which resulted in me getting glasses. Then, last fall, I got my g1 license - and later, my g2 - which states that it's illegal for me to drive without my prescription glasses... Sooo now I have to carry around my eyeglasses and my prescription sunglasses.

fullsizerender-4.jpg

I also like to carry around a little makeup bag full of beauty and hygiene related products. Wherever I go, I must have my Blistex Lip Medex lip balm which I've been using regularly since 2015. It's a life saver, honestly. My lips would not forgive me if I didn't apply this balm as often as I do. I also carry like 3 lipsticks with me at any given time (because, you know, one is just not enough). Currently, I have the NYX Lip Lingerie, Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Colour, and the L'Oreal Matte Liquid Lipstick in my bag. Lastly, I bring a hand lotion such as my current Bath & Body Works Paris Amour lotion and a hand sanitizer.

fullsizerender-3.jpg

Last, but certainly not least, is my wallet. Again, Kate Spade and black with gold embellishments. The inside is very cluttered (hence why it's not pictured), but it is separated into 3 sections, with a zippered pouch in the middle. Currently, inside my wallet are: receipts, some cash, my credit card, my debit card, a Cineplex Scene Rewards card, my CAA membership card, a coupon for McDonalds McFlurries, change, my student ID and bus pass, my Presto Go pass, my driver's license, my Ontario Health Insurance card, my Starbucks card, and a polaroid photo of my boyfriend.

What do you carry in your handbag?

Hello, 2017

Happy New Year! Can you believe it's already 2017?! I still think sometimes that 2010 was a couple years ago... Time really does go by so quickly. Though we are already a few days into the year, I thought I'd whip up a post reflecting on 2016 and looking forward to 2017.

Despite all of the devastating moments of the past 12 months (Bowie, whyyyyy?!?!), would I say that 2016 was an awful year? Probably not. While I do think the past year will be remembered for it's tragedies, I do want to cling onto some of the better parts of 2016.

I attended prom, graduated high school, spent the entire summer in Orlando, saw a bunch of my fave singers in concert, spent TWO WHOLE WEEKS on a cruise with my boyfriend and family, shared a plane home with Shawn Mendes, started uni (!!!!), and made some amazing new friends. There was so much for me to grateful for in 2016 that I would like to think that focusing on it all might help to alleviate the sadness that came out of the year.

img_3168IMG_1259IMG_1393img_4392img_4347img_0596

I can't wait for this new year, to see what it has to offer. In 2017, so many exciting things are happening. I'll be finishing up my first year of university, declaring my major, visiting New York City, spending another summer in Orlando, and much more. I began my year on the sofa in my Orlando vacation home watching Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with my family, as I do every year.My nine-day vacation was so needed after finals week at the end of December. It was the perfect way to relax and reboot myself for the new term ahead of me. Although I didn't get to do all of the holiday-related activities that Orlando has to offer (notably, the tragically discontinued Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights), I did visit the beautifully decorated Magic Kingdom and saw all it had to offer, including my favourite part: the Christmas parade!!

I think that, as cheesy as it may sound, the crap that happened last year might actually have made the clean slate of a new year even more appreciated, and I hope that this year can be made so much better. This year, I plan to be more "in the moment", to blog more, to enjoy everything to the fullest. I hope everyone had a safe and lovely New Years Eve, and that 2017 is wonderful for everyone!

Senior Prom & High School Graduation

IMG_1404
IMG_1404

Good afternoon everyone! Finally, nearly a month after grad, I have recuperated from June, which was the busiest month of the year yet. Wrapping up my senior year of high school was incredibly exhausting, with two in-class exams and one formal exam on top of final projects, my end-of-year dance recital, graduation and a line-up of birthdays to celebrate. But I powered through and now I'm sitting back, soaking up the sun...ahhh....

Now that I've got more time on my hands, I've been downloading the pictures off my camera from everything I've been up to, and I came across the lovely pictures taken before my prom and at my graduation so I thought that I'd share them all with you.

My prom was really great and I think what made it special was the crowd of people I went with,  especially my strikingly handsome date. I was planning on doing a make-up look post for my prom make-up, but I completely ran out of time - I opted for a rose gold eye to accent my rose gold jewelry, with a subtle rose-coloured matte lip.

A few weeks later was my graduation, which was probably the most daunting of all my events at the end of the school year, but it was also really great once I went through it all. All my hard work this past year - the late nights spent studying, the times I had to turn down times to hang with friends to do homework, and full weekends spent putting together countless projects and essays - finally was rewarded as I was given my Ontario Secondary School Diploma and was given a certificate naming me an Ontario Scholar, putting me on the honour roll with an overall average of 88%.

High school was a roller coaster journey and I was so lucky that with hard work and determination, I went from getting a 70% average in grade ten to a nearly 90% average in grade 12. I can only hope that I can continue onto university with the same success that I had in my high school years.

Exploring McMaster University

Happy Saturday, everybody! I'm not sure how the weather is worldwide as of today, though I do know for certain that here in Southern Ontario the weather is quite poor today. Especially in Hamilton, where I spent my morning and early afternoon.

Currently, I am just about to hit the point of my senior year where I begin applying to universities then spending the subsequent months crossing my fingers and praying to receive acceptance letters. Before I start applying, however, I thought it might be best to get an idea of what I'm getting myself into. By that I mean attending the Fall Preview for my top university choice: McMaster University.

I've been on a constant back and forth, up and down rollercoaster when it comes to my program of interest. I started with Creative Writing, then realized how unrealistic it is to become the next J.K. Rowling meanwhile having no job to support me. Then I switched over to Journalism and later changed my mind. I also went through English, History and Child & Youth Care, before settling on my current choice: Psychology. And out of every school, McMaster's Social Science faculty has reigned superior to me.

I travelled out to McMaster early this morning, with my parents, my boyfriend and his parents. Coincidently enough, McMaster is also my boyfriend's first choice, instead for him it's Life Sciences. After parking in the visitor's lot and taking a school bus - yup, a big yellow one - to the heart of campus, our day began.

We started at McMaster University Student Centre, where we met up with a lovely British woman in her fourth year at Mac who led a group of us through a 45-minute campus tour. It was absolutely pouring rain as we did the mostly outdoor tour though all we could do was grin and bear it. Despite the dreary weather, I was excited and eager to learn about the campus. She took us inside the Life Sciences building, past the construction site which will soon be home to the L.R. Wilson Hall - the new Liberal Arts/Social Sciences building - and inside one of the libraries as well as the on-campus athletic centre.

Afterwards, my parents and I left my boyfriend - who headed to one of the residency tours - and we went to Gilmour Hall for an information session on the Social Sciences faculty. Also around 45-minutes long, it was so informative and really helped me to get a better idea of what each program really can offer. I also learned of some really incredible opportunities such as the interdisciplinary programs - meaning combining different programs to create one completely unique to your own interests and career goals - and the paid internships they offer to help give you experience before you graduate.

They also spoke about a particular research program they are doing for the Social Sciences faculty which sparked my interest. Dogs at Mac is a program where the bond between humans and animals, and the canine's affect on humans during stressful situations is examined. This is done by using three trained therapy dogs - Lily, Liam, and Scout - to release tension due to coursework and exams in students. I absolutely love dogs and this program sold me on McMaster haha

Afterwards, my boyfriend was at an information session for Life Sciences so my parents and I headed to Starbucks. As you do. We ended up sitting down for about 20-minutes, chatting about the school and my program. I ultimately have decided I want to integrate Social Psychology and Social Work, to form my ideal program. Once I'd finished my White Chocolate Mocha & croissant, we went to the info booths for Social Psych and Social Work, plus the Financial Aid and I also got to meet Lily, one of the therapy dogs, who was the sweetest little thing ever.

We ended our day at the Campus Store. Wow. It's huge and full of incredible little goodies. I was in McMaster merch heaven. My boyfriend's family and mine regrouped and headed out, but not before I bought myself a super cute maroon (their school colour) McMaster t-shirt.

After today, I feel like a huge weight of uncertainty and stress about what to expect for university has been lifted. Now, I'm just super excited to get on with this part of my life and start applying!!

If anyone goes to McMaster or knows someone who goes there or just is applying to any other university, leave me a comment and let me know how it's going! Hope everyone has an incredible rest of their weekend :)

The Anatomy of a Handbag

screen-shot-2017-03-28-at-3-46-42-pm.png

A handbag is a woman's best friend, but it's also a woman's worst enemy. Think of a handbag like a toolbox. It has everything you need right there at your fingertips. But, if you have too many useless bolts and screwdrivers, it will become a cluttered disaster. You know what I'm saying: the Cluttered Handbag from Hell. Trust me, we've all been there.

Recently, I decided to clean out my own handbag and organize with only what I think is a "necessity". So, here's a quick peek into my bag, to give you an idea of what you should really have in your bag.

image1   image7

The Handbag: My handbag is a medium-sized top handle purse from Louis Vuitton. It's a zip-up, all black with gold hardware. It also has a black, removable shoulder strap in case you aren't a fan of top handles. For me, it's the perfect size because it fits nicely on my shoulder - though, I mostly hold it on my arm (bent-elbow style). The interior is light brown and, like the exterior, has a pattern of the LV logo. It's spacious and has two compartments - one larger, one smaller - for a cell phone or other small items, like pens or lip glosses.

image2

Make-up Bag: It is always a good idea to keep a small bag of your crucial make-up products tucked in your bag, just in case of emergency. In my bag, I've included:

- Covergirl Bombshell Volume by Lashblast mascara

- Lip Medex Blistex lip balm

- Geurlain lipstick in 143 Rouge Automatique

- SolTerre lotion (aka hotel hand lotion)

- travel sized container of Tums Freshers

- a small container of Aleve pills

- a few bobby pins

image4   image3

Gum & Mints: I always like to keep a package of gum and a bottle of mint Tic Tacs in my purse, just in case I feel a little less than minty and I need to freshen up my breath. Currently, my favourite gum is Excel White in Bubblemint flavour. It's a great mix of mint and bubblegum.

image6

Wallet: I think it goes without saying that you should keep your wallet in your purse. A lot of people don't think of carrying their wallet around with them everywhere, especially if they aren't going to shop anywhere or if they don't have a driver's license (obviously you have to bring your driver's license everywhere if you're driving). But it's just a good idea to keep your wallet on you in case you run into trouble and have an emergency on your hands. In my wallet, I usually keep about $30 in cash, my debit card, my OHIP card (which, as a citizen of Ontario, is crucial for me to recieve any kind of medical attention), my student I.D. card, my Starbucks rewards card and any reward cards I have for any stores (i.e. American Eagle's 'aerewards' card).

image5

Sunglasses: It is so important for everyone to wear sunglasses outside. The sun does so much damage to your eyes and especially in the summer, you should take care of your eyes with a cute pair of sunnies. It's also probably a good idea to keep your sunglasses in a case in your purse, so that your sunglasses don't get crushed by everything else.

Hopefully this little blog post helped some of you out! If anyone thinks of any other helpful tips or anything else that should be included, just let everyone else know! Thanks for readng, Happy handbag organizing!!
